NOTE TO GROWN UPS

Teaching little ones to clean takes time and effort, and it’s important to start at a young age (3 or 4). With toddlers, have them help with cleaning if they aren’t able to do a whole task (e.g. sort socks). For all children, it is important to gradually release responsibility. Start with one task they can do independently and increase expectations from there.

Benefits of Bilingualism (FAQs):

Any advice on managing two Spanish dialects in the household? Does this cause confusion for kids?

Exposing kids to different dialects is beneficial for broadening their perspectives and helping them communicate cross-culturally. Kids may switch vocabulary when talking to different parents, which reflects flexibility rather than confusion.

What do you recommend if I’m not completely fluent and my child’s school doesn’t have an immersion class?

Encourage as much Spanish exposure as possible. Use whatever Spanish you know, even if it means mixing languages. Utilize resources like the Canticos App for songs and activities that reinforce learning.

Do you recommend teaching different subjects in different languages?

Yes, teaching specific topics in Spanish enhances vocabulary not usually covered in conversation, making it a valuable learning opportunity.

We speak Spanish and English in our home but my child almost always answers in English. How can I encourage her to speak more in Spanish?

Ask your child to repeat in Spanish without pressure. Celebrate their efforts to speak the language and provide vocabulary support as needed.

Should I set aside time for each language or mix them?

Authentic opportunities for language use are more effective than strictly scheduled time. Encourage your child to engage with their interests in both languages to explore joyfully.

Any advice for households where one parent speaks Spanish and the other English?

Speaking diverse languages at home offers a robust foundation for children. They may initially mix languages but that’s part of the learning process.

How can my child learn language through play?

Incorporating pretend play allows children to develop both social and cognitive skills while practicing new vocabulary in a fun manner.

What are the social and cultural benefits of bilingualism?

Bilingual children have the chance to learn about various cultures, which enhances empathy and understanding towards others.

What are some cognitive benefits of bilingualism?

Research shows bilingual brains have better executive functioning, including focus, multitasking, and working memory.
